Should You Bundle or Separate Your Products and Services?

bundle

Whether we like it or not, we’ve all been pulled in by businesses that bundle. Think about it, have you driven through a restaurant drive-thru? You made your meal a combo, right? This is the perfect example of how a business uses a bundle option to bring in more dollars.

Benefits of the Bundle

There are quite a few benefits to offering a bundle option for your products or services. As I already mentioned, when services are grouped together, it opens the door for increased sales for you. Bundling is often times just as beneficial to the customer because it saves them money in the long run. Take, for example, our drive-thru scenario; if a customer purchases a sandwich, french fries, and a drink separately they will pay more. Imagine you own a pool installation and service business and want to bundle your services. Offering pool installation along with maintenance and regular cleaning services together for one price that is discounted slightly is a great way to bundle. It benefits both the business and the customer. The business sells additional services, which translates to making more money, and the customer saves money on services that will be needed along the way. It’s a win, win.

A few years ago Harvard Business School conducted research on businesses offering an option to bundle. It revealed that bundle options are beneficial, however they really only impact your bottom line in a positive way if you also offer your products and services separately as well. Consumers are put off by businesses that only offer certain items in a bundle only. As it turns out, we as consumers are wise. Overall, potential customers feel as though businesses that do not offer separate options are simply trying to make money and are not making the customer the priority. So, the main point here is that it is best to offer both bundle pricing and pricing for products and services separately.
